The Blue Flag is an exclusive eco-label awarded to over 3300 beaches and marinas in 36 countries across Europe, South Africa, Morocco, New Zealand, Canada and the Caribbean. The Blue Flag Programme is owned and run by the independent non-profit organisation Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The Blue Flag works towards sustainable development at beaches/marinas through strict criteria dealing with water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and other services. The Blue Flag Programme includes environmental education and information for the public, decision makers and tourism operators. The Versilia territory covers an area of about 160square kms on the North Western Tuscany coast (it boasts20 km of uninterrupted sandy beaches from Torre del Lago Puccini as far as Vittoria Apuana in the north) including the municipalities of Camaiore, Forte dei Marmi, Massarosa, Pietrasanta, Seravezza, Stazzema and Viareggio. The area has always had a natural tourist vocation as balneotherapy treatments started here during the second half of the 19th century when Giuseppe Giannelli, a phisician involved in medical hydrology, published the first study on the subject entitled: "Il manuale per i bagni di mare" (treatise on sea-bathin), qualifying Versilia as a beach of tradition. From a naturalistic point of view, the area is well known for safeguarding the environment with a rich diversified natural landscape comprising the majestic mountains of the Apuan Alps - offering a magnificent backdrop to the colourful coastline - consisting in some of the highest peaks in the region. These are part of the well-known Apuan Alps Regional Park, providing an ideal environment for trekking, walking, cycling, horse riding or mountain climbing.
